It’s Hot!

It’s hot!  The reality of the heat I’m sure has set in for everyone, but are you doing everything you can to protect yourself from dehydration?

The first is obvious- drink water.  I don’t mean just guzzle two bottles of water before you come to the gym.  I mean be consuming water all day.  The goal is to drink half your body weight in ounces a day.  The best time to do this is to start drinking water right when you wake up and give yourself little benchmarks throughout the day.  You could say you need to have drank 40 ounces by lunch and then another 40 ounces before you get to the gym.  Staying hydrated is essential in this heat, it’s also in general just really great for your body.

Eating can sometimes be difficult in the heat.  However, if you’re not properly fueled the heat can really kick you in the gut.  It’s important to be getting in high quality real foods throughout the day such as fruits, vegetables, and quality protein sources.  What you consume to fuel your body is always important, but even more so in the heat.

Leave your Superman cape at home.  It’s not the time to be a hero.  If you’re feeling dizzy, nauseous, or in general out of sorts you shouldn’t work out.  It may mean you’re dehydrated or having some adverse effects from the heat.  It’s important to listen to these signs and stop working out, get your body cooled down, and consume water.  Coconut water and Kill Cliff can also be really amazing to help give you some extra relief from the heat by providing you electrolytes to help replenish what you burn during the workout.

We always want everyone to be at the gym crushing it with the fitfam- it’s really important that during these hot days of the summer we are all smart and preparing our bodies to optimally perform and get through this heat!
